New pieces in the works

With all of the schedule changes and life transitions, I think I’m finally getting settled into a more productive work routine. This time of year I’m usually spending a great deal of time in the local schools, but with the world in the state it is in now, school has been cancelled. Days and times are filled differently and feel differently, but resets are not always a bad thing.

Enjoy watching a bit of the design and decorating of the mishima process, which consists of carving the clay pieces (I wax my pieces before carving) and then inlaying the carving with either slip or underglaze before bisque firing. The serving tray is part of my Camellia Mandala line in my Doodle Ware collection. The spice shaker is included in my Doodle Ware collection as well.

Stay safe, stay home!

Sketching a carving design for a cracker tray : Video

Karan SimpsonComment

For grins, as I’m working on a small batch store update. I thought I would share a bit of the process of something I’m currently making, a serving tray for crackers (or olives, or cheese squares, etc. etc.). :)

The overall carving design I planned for the tray is 9.5” L x 2” W. I wanted to create a vine similar to one of the rings in my new line of hand carved bowl and serving ware designs (shown at the start of the video). My process for spacing and alignment for the design is demonstrated along with how the sketch is drawn and marked on the tray, and the completed carving.

Video does not have sound, but I hope the steps can be followed easily should anyone like to do so. I’ll be glad to answer questions about the process if you’d like to comment or send me a message. I’ll graduate to sound and verbal input soon… once I get used to the sound of my voice.

Ya’ll stay safe out there!

Thanks to all for the great response to the last shop update. The shelves are empty! I’m busy working to fill them up again with custom orders and pieces for the next shop update scheduled for late October 2019.

In early December I’ll be participating in a pop up shop in Nashville. I’m very excited to be working with some exceptionally sweet people on this one. More details to follow!

While you’re waiting, check out one of the demo videos I’m working on for making the drove of piggy banks coming up. More to come!
